Teeth Grinding
According to the National Sleep Foundation, grinding your teeth (Bruxism), affects about 8 percent of adults. If you grind your teeth occasionally, it usually does not cause problems. If you grind your teeth on a regular basis, you may be causing your teeth damage or other problems can occur.
There are multiple causes for bruxism, but often times it is caused by stress and anxiety. Most of the time, grinding your teeth happens at night and people are unaware that they are doing it. A few of the signs include waking up with a headache or sore jaw that radiates to your ear; sensitive, worn down, chipped or cracking teeth. If you have any of these signs or symptoms, please let Dr. Jeff (or your dentist) know and he can examine your jaw and mouth for signs of bruxism.
Many people who chronically grind their teeth are fitted with a custom mouthguard to help cushion and protect their teeth.
Sports
Research conducted by the American Dental Association (ADA) found that individuals are 60 times more likely to damage their teeth when not wearing a mouthguard while engaged in contact sports or rigorous physical exercise.
It’s important to wear a protective mouthguard if you participate in contact sports or rigorous physical exercise. You can contact us if you would like to get fitted for a sports mouthguard or if you have any questions on how we can help protect your smile.
